Everyday Elevators: Response Considerations for the Fire Service
Elevator emergencies are a routine response for many fire departments, but every elevator call places firefighters around complex machinery, electrical systems, moving cars, counterweights, and open hoistways.
This class focuses on the practical considerations firefighters should understand when responding to everyday elevator incidents. Rather than turning firefighters into elevator mechanics, the goal is to help responders better understand what they are looking at, recognize common elevator systems, identify hazards, and make safer decisions during stalled-car and occupant-removal incidents.
Topics include hydraulic vs. traction elevators, basic elevator components, car and hoistway doors, door interlocks, leveling and door zones, firefighter emergency operation, power control, locating a stalled car, occupant communication, safe access, and recognizing when a routine elevator call is becoming a technical rescue problem.
